- Identify the periodical on the hitlist
- Activate the holdings display record.
- Display the detailed holdings and location information.
- Get the periodical
|
Note: Telnet is a text program. The mouse does not work. Navigation is by keyboard.
|
|
- Hit Enter to bring down the Find menu. (Find should be highlighted. If not, use arrow key to highlight Find.)
- Use arrow key to select Title on the menu.
- Hit Enter.
|
|
- Type in the full name of the periodical (NOT the title of the article). Do not abbreviate.
- Hit Enter.
|
|
- If there are multiple matches for the title, a hitlist will display. The periodicals usually are at the top, so press 1.
If there is only one match to the title, only one record will display.
- If another hitlist displays, look for the word "periodical" in brackets ( Periodical] ).
- Hit the number that identifies the periodical record. (The record numbers appear on the left side of the screen.) Do not hit Enter.
- A single record is called the holdings display. The displayed record describes the item that the library owns (holds) and tells where it is located.
|
|
The Holdings Display has two parts: above the horizontal line is the item description (bibliographic record) and below the line is the item location. The item location for periodicals is not shown on the initial display. Several steps are necessary to get the locations for periodicals.
|
|
- Press L. This will give the name of the library that owns (holds) the periodical.
- Press 1. (If several numbers are given, press the number for library that will be used.) This display shows the latest volume and issue available in the library.
- Press 1 again to get the complete holdings information. This will tell where each volume is located.

In the record shown above, McWherter Library (the Main Library on campus) holds volumes 1 through 73 (the current volume) of American Literature. Volumes 1-26 are Bound; Volumes 27-71 are on Microfilm; Volumes 56-57 and 59-72, issue numbers 1 and 2 are also Bound; Volumes and issues after that are Unbound. Issue #2 of Volume 68 is missing. The library also owns an index for volumes 1-38.
In the McWherter Library, most volumes are located on the second floor. The current volumes (unbound) and older volumes kept in paper (bound) are shelved alphabetically by name of the periodical. The volumes kept in microformat are kept in a closed area. Go to the desk in the Microforms Department to request these items.
If you are unable to locate the periodical you are looking for, ask staff at the Periodicals Desk for assistance.
Periodicals not owned by the U of M Libraries may be available in other local libraries. Ask at the Periodicals Desk for assistance in locating other libraries that may own them or in getting copies from other sources. Some periodicals are available electronically.
U of M students, staff and faculty may use the Interlibrary Loan Service to obtain copies of articles from periodicals our library does not own. Visit Room 204 in McWherter Library or call 901-678-2262.
Periodicals are not checked out of the library. There are many places in the library where you may comfortably read and take notes. If you want a personal copy, you may use one of several copiers located in the library. Photocopy machines are located in both the Periodicals Department and in the Microforms Department. You can use coins or your U of M ID as a
copy card. The most convenient and economical way to copy is to use your U of M ID as a copy card or purchase a copy card from the machines located in the copy rooms on the first and second floors. For further information about copying, ask at the Copy Center on the first floor of McWherter Library.
