Memphis
Executive Summary
This is a project intended for the community-wide networking primary application area and (if applicable) for the education and lifelong learning secondary application area. The goal is to plan a Memphis civil rights research consortium and community information network and to increase access to library, archival, and museum material to benefit non-professional (and professional) scholars and the public in Memphis and beyond. A community partnership (the University of Memphis Libraries, LeMoyne-Owen College, the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis-Shelby County Public Library and Information Center, State Technical Institute at Memphis, and Shelby State Community College) seeks funding to hire a consultant to prepare a plan of organizational and network development. The diverse clienteles of the partner institutions works against disparity of access to civil-rights information, information which should be a component in the education of every U. S. citizen. Memphis, a historic center of civil-rights activity, should also be a well-known center of civil-rights scholarship. Significant research institutions exist in Memphis with important holdings in the area of civil rights. The network infrastructure for the Consortium is already in place. The need is coordination of those factors.
